Chapter Conservation Project

Chapter members planted oak trees in Haskin Park in conjunction with the San Antonio Parks Department.

Ol' Shavano Chapter members worked with the San Antonio Parks Department to convert a vacant lot into a neighborhood park when the owner conveyed the property to the City for a park. In November 1999, chapter members potted acorns from oak trees that had been planted by the DAR in 1932. For the Chapter's Arbor Day celebration, members, with assistance from the Parks Department, planted the new oak trees in Haskin Park. Ol' Shavano Chapter has taken the park as an ongoing conservation project to convert and maintain what was a neighborhood eyesore into an inviting place with trees, shrubs, flowers, benches and playground equipment for the enjoyment of the residents. For this project, Ol' Shavano Chapter received an Award of Excellence from the TSDAR State Chairman for Conservation.
